Amazonas Theater or Opera House
Teatro Amazonas
This remarkable landmark was erected in the midst of the Amazon jungle in 1896 at the peak of the rubber boom. The tour shows off the lobby of marble and inlaid tropical hardwoods, the fine concert hall and the romantic mural in the upstairs ballroom. The Amazon Theatre, built with the wealth of the rubber barons, was fifteen years in the making. All materials were imported from Europe, including ironware, structures, fittings, statues, marbles, lamps, mirrors and crystals. Only the wood used in the floor and chairs was Brazilian, from Bahia. The Amazon Theatre was inaugurated on December, 31, 1896.

Meeting of the Waters
encontro das aguas
This natural spectacle occurs where the muddy waters of Solimões River meet with the black waters of Negro River, running side by side for 4 to 6 kilometers without mixing, due to water differences of temperature, density and speed. The two rivers carry on for miles with progressively less distinct whorls and eddies marking the interface between them. It's a classic Manaus day trip, and a great excuse to get out on the Amazon.

Rio Negro Palace Cultural Center
Palacio-Rio-Negro
This gorgeous palace built at the height of the rubber boom has been transformed into one of the city's leading cultural centers, home to several small but excellent museums. Built by a Manaus rubber baron in the early years of the 20th century, the main palace is wonderfully ornate, with rich tropical hardwoods used for floors and doors, and banisters and moldings. Some rooms have been decorated with lovely period furnishings while others now serve as display spaces for modern Brazilian art and sculpture. The palace was used as the state governor's mansion for many years. There are still some artifacts from that period, but it's the building, not the history, that impresses.

Amazonian Natural Science Museum
museu ciencias da amazonia
Address: Estrada Belém s/n, Colônia Cachoeira Grande. Few locals visit this museum, know about it, or would even want to, considering that it's basically critters they'd find (almost) in their backyard. For visitors, though, it's a chance to see a live pirarucu and other fauna (mostly preserved) of the region. A Japanese entomologist, who specialized in butterflies, single-handedly constructed this museum. He even built it with his own money and resources. It's out of the way and about half an hour by taxi, but worth the trip. The nearby INPA is a preserve and research center with birds and other wildlife.

Parintins
Parintins - Boi Garantido
Boi Bumbá Festival: Bumbá Meu Boi or Boi Bumbá is a popular regional festival which takes place annually in North and Northeast Brazil in Parintins, state of Amazonas. It tells the story of the death and resurrection of an ox. This event also pits the two famous Samba School "Caprichoso" with the colors blue and black bull and "Garantido" with the red colors and white bull. Each side tries to tell their version of the story with music, dance, animatronics float (parade) and songs. The two sides are so strongly divided that streets can be clearly viewed with their opposing colors. The town of Parintins is the only place in the world where Coca-Cola ads are in blue.
